Fiona Apple is a long time advocate of social distancing. For nearly two decades, she has rarely left her Venice Beach home to take her dog Mercy for a walk. She doesn’t use social media. She tends to avoid the press and rarely listens to new music, due to a combination of disinterest and aversion to influence. These qualities give her work a kind of wild authenticity, whereby no dividing lines can be made out between her emotional outbursts and the music of her peers. Even if her songs are deeply personal, the artist herself can seem lost, seems to become invisible. When Apple releases an album, as it has done once or twice a decade since the late nineties, it doesn’t pop up so much, it just peeks through the blinds of her life.
