20th Century Paddy: The Songs Of Shane MacGowan is a wide-ranging tribute to one of Ireland’s most distinctive and influential songwriters. Across three records, established music legends and rising artists reinterpret the songs that defined MacGowan’s career with The Pogues and beyond.
The collection brings together artists connected by MacGowan’s musical spirit, from U2, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, The Libertines, Primal Scream and The Jesus And Mary Chain to contemporary Irish voices including Hozier, Lisa O’Neill, Amble, Kingfishr and The Murder Capital. Friends and admirers including Kate Moss and Johnny Depp also contribute to this celebration of his life and work.
Rather than simply recreating the originals, each performer brings a new perspective to MacGowan’s songs while preserving their poetry, humour, humanity and rebellious energy. The album also celebrates The Pogues, whose singular combination of traditional Irish music and punk provided the perfect setting for his writing.
In recognition of MacGowan’s long-standing support for Dublin Simon Community, at least 50% of participating artists’ royalties from the album will be donated to the organisation’s work supporting people experiencing homelessness. This three-record edition is presented in a gatefold sleeve.
