Originally released in 1981, Throbbing Gristle's Greatest Hits — also known as Entertainment Through Pain — brings together some of the most essential recordings from one of the most influential and uncompromising groups in experimental music.
Formed by Genesis P-Orridge, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Chris Carter and Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson, Throbbing Gristle pioneered what became known as industrial music, combining electronics, tape manipulation, noise, unsettling atmospheres and confrontational performance with occasional excursions into surprisingly infectious electronic rhythms.
The deliberately tongue-in-cheek idea of a Throbbing Gristle "greatest hits" collection provides an excellent overview of the band's extraordinary range. Tracks including Hamburger Lady, Hot On The Heels Of Love, Subhuman, 20 Jazz Funk Greats, United and Adrenalin move between stark experimentation, primitive electronics, proto-industrial noise and mutant synth-pop.
This reissue is pressed on striking transparent orange vinyl and includes a black inner sleeve, download code and an 8-page "Industrial News" booklet assembled from archival material belonging to Cosey Fanni Tutti, Chris Carter and Peter Christopherson. The booklet includes archival imagery and material that adds further context to the visual and musical world surrounding the group.
An essential collection from a band whose radical approach helped establish the vocabulary of industrial and experimental electronic music.
