Originally released in 1996, Roots is the sixth studio album from Brazilian heavy metal pioneers Sepultura and the band’s final studio recording to feature founding vocalist and rhythm guitarist Max Cavalera.
Produced by Ross Robinson, the album pushed Sepultura’s sound into heavier and more adventurous territory, combining crushing down-tuned riffs with groove metal, hardcore and traditional Brazilian rhythms. Highlights include “Roots Bloody Roots,” “Attitude,” “Ratamahatta” and “Refuse/Resist”-style bursts of relentless intensity, while collaborations and indigenous influences give the album its unmistakable character.
Widely regarded as one of the defining metal albums of the 1990s, Roots had a lasting influence on groove, alternative and nu metal. This expanded edition includes the original album alongside live session recordings, demos, instrumental rough mixes and additional material.
