Californication is the landmark seventh studio album from Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the record that ushered in one of the most successful periods of the band's career.
Originally released in 1999, Californication marked the return of guitarist John Frusciante, reuniting him with Anthony Kiedis, Flea and Chad Smith. His melodic guitar playing helped reshape the band's sound, bringing a more spacious and reflective quality to their established fusion of alternative rock, funk and punk.
The album produced some of the Chili Peppers' most enduring songs, including Scar Tissue, Otherside and the title track Californication. While tracks such as Around The World and Get On Top retain the band's trademark funk-rock energy, songs including Porcelain and acoustic closer Road Trippin' reveal a quieter and more introspective side.
Lyrically, the album finds Kiedis exploring addiction, recovery, relationships and the contradictions of life in California. The title track became one of the band's defining songs, examining the darker side of Hollywood and the culture surrounding fame, beauty and the California dream.
Produced by longtime collaborator Rick Rubin, Californication became the band's biggest-selling studio album worldwide and helped establish the musical direction they would continue to explore throughout the following decade.
Featuring an exceptional run of singles alongside fan favourites including Parallel Universe, This Velvet Glove and Road Trippin', Californication remains an essential Red Hot Chili Peppers album.
