Thriller is Michael Jackson’s landmark sixth studio album and one of the most celebrated and influential records in popular music history.
Originally released in 1982, Thriller reunited Jackson with producer Quincy Jones following the success of Off The Wall. Together they created an extraordinary fusion of pop, R&B, funk and rock, combining immaculate production with Jackson’s unmistakable vocals, songwriting and performance.
Seven of the album’s nine tracks became Top 10 singles in the US, including the iconic Billie Jean, Beat It, Thriller, Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ and P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing). The Girl Is Mine features Paul McCartney, while Beat It famously includes an explosive guitar solo from Eddie Van Halen.
From the relentless funk of Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ and the instantly recognisable bassline of Billie Jean to the cinematic title track, Thriller demonstrated just how ambitious a pop album could be. Its music videos and performances were equally transformative, helping reshape the relationship between recorded music, television and popular culture.
Thriller went on to become the best-selling album of all time, earning its place as a defining release not only in Michael Jackson’s catalogue but in the history of popular music.
This 2016 reissue presents the original nine-track album on 140g Vinyl LP through Epic Records.
