Dire Straits’ self-titled debut album introduced the world to Mark Knopfler’s unmistakable guitar playing and the band’s distinctive blend of rock, blues and roots music. Originally released in 1978, Dire Straits remains one of the defining debut albums of its era.
At the heart of the record is the enduring classic “Sultans Of Swing,” with Knopfler’s fluid fingerpicked guitar work becoming an instant signature for the band. The album also features favourites including “Down To The Waterline,” “Water Of Love,” “Six Blade Knife” and “Wild West End,” showcasing the understated musicianship and storytelling that would become hallmarks of Dire Straits.
Produced by Muff Winwood, the album’s spacious, uncluttered sound stood apart from much of the late-1970s rock landscape and established Dire Straits as a major international act.
This remastered reissue presents the classic album on heavyweight 180g vinyl.
