David Byrne Who Is The Sky?

Who Is The Sky? is the 2025 studio album from David Byrne, marking his first new album since 2018’s acclaimed American Utopia. Released through Matador Records, the record finds Byrne continuing his lifelong exploration of human connection, optimism and the strange contradictions of everyday life.

The album began with simple demos Byrne recorded using acoustic guitar over programmed beats and loops before developing into something far more expansive. Grammy-winning producer Kid Harpoon (Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus) produced the record, with its 12 songs arranged by New York chamber ensemble Ghost Train Orchestra, bringing orchestral colour and cinematic depth to Byrne’s distinctive songwriting.

A cast of collaborators joins Byrne throughout the album, including St. Vincent, Paramore’s Hayley Williams, The Smile drummer Tom Skinner and American Utopia percussionist Mauro Refosco. The result moves between avant-garde experimentation and accessible pop, combining playful rhythms and intricate arrangements with Byrne’s unmistakable observations on life, love and society.

Personal, humorous, cinematic and characteristically curious, Who Is The Sky? builds upon the optimistic spirit of American Utopia while asking bigger questions about purpose, relationships and finding meaning amid an increasingly chaotic world.
