Madvillainy is the landmark 2004 album from Madvillain, the legendary collaboration between enigmatic rapper MF DOOM and producer Madlib. Widely regarded as one of the defining underground hip-hop albums of the 2000s, it brought together two fiercely individual artists at the peak of their creative powers.
Across 22 tightly constructed tracks, DOOM's intricate rhymes, dark humour and comic-book personas collide with Madlib's brilliantly unconventional production. Drawing from dusty soul and jazz records, obscure dialogue, psychedelic textures and off-kilter beats, Madvillainy largely abandons conventional song structures in favour of short, densely packed pieces that flow together like a surreal hip-hop collage.
The album includes enduring favourites Accordion, All Caps, Rapp Snitch Knishes, America's Most Blunted, Meat Grinder and Figaro, alongside guest appearances from Quasimoto, MED, Wildchild and Stacy Epps. From the warped jazz of Shadows Of Tomorrow to the storytelling of Fancy Clown and social commentary of Strange Ways, the record continually shifts direction while maintaining its unmistakable atmosphere.
Released through Stones Throw Records, Madvillainy has grown from an underground favourite into a genuine hip-hop classic, influencing generations of rappers and producers with its uncompromising approach to beats, sampling, rhyme and structure.
Presented across Vinyl 2LP, Madvillainy is an essential addition to any MF DOOM, Madlib or hip-hop vinyl collection.
