Description
Subtitled From Memphis to Hollywood, the second volume of the Johnny Cash bootleg series is a mind-blowing 57 tracks recorded between 1955 and 1969. It begins with Cash’s first radio performance with the Tennessee Two at KWEM in West Memphis and includes the radio introduction and closing, a couple of tunes, and Cash reading the sponsor’s advertisement. Then 12 previously unreleased demos follow, including the earliest-known version of Cash’s immortal “I Walk the Line.” Seven Sun Records rarities, including the previously unreleased “Wide Open Road” and “Leave That Junk Alone” show Cash was artistically complete before his legend left the station. Twenty-five recordings for Columbia Records from 1958-1969, featuring orphaned singles that never made an album, B-sides, and studio outtakes finish off this essential compilation. His cover of Bob Dylan’s “One Too Many Mornings,” his co-write with Johnny Horton for “Girl In Saskatoon,” the single “The Folk Singer” that was later covered by Nick Cave as “The Singer,” and a demo of his own “Hardin Wouldn’t Run” are among the essential highlights.
