Description
Grinspoon’s 1997 debut album, Guide to Better Living, had a lightness of touch that saw the Lismore rockers balancing their riff-heavy attack with upbeat punky pop songs such as “Just Ace”. But album number two, 1999’s Easy, is an altogether darker and more intense affair. Exhibit A is the dirgey main riff in “Secrets”, which was written by vocalist/guitarist Phil Jamieson after he was kicked out of home by an ex (“She’s the girl that you never liked anyway,” he snarls in the chorus).
American producer Jonathan Burnside (Melvins, Faith No More) succeeded in capturing the band’s heavier, more brooding side, bringing an ominous mood even to singles such as “Rock Show (You Don’t Know Me)”. “Better Off Dead” is an aggressive feast of razor-sharp riffing; the instrumental “Overdriver” showcases the group’s command of dynamics and groove, while the one-two punch of short, sharp rockers “All the Time” and “Yanimani” makes for an explosive salvo late on the album. Grinspoon’s next record, 2002’s New Detention, brought a maturity that saw them expand their songwriting chops, with hits such as “Chemical Heart”. At this stage of their career, though, the focus was on turning their amps to 11 and letting fly.
