Lioness is a raw, heartbreaking patchwork of unreleased tracks, outtakes and covers, pulled from nine years of Amy Winehouse’s too-short career. And while there are glimpses of the potty-mouthed, rebellious Winehouse the world grew to love (“Valerie”, “Between the Cheats”), we’re often in the company of a more restrained singer. Her gravelly, pane-rattling voice remains, but “Our Day Will Come”—a reggae reworking of Ruby & The Romantics’ doo-wop hit—is mellow and delicate, while “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” flaunts her celestial falsetto.
